The LIFE AMYBEAR project deals with the recorded increase in the incidents of human and bear interaction in the areas of Amyntaio and Florina Municipalities. This "interaction" creates problems that have been known for many years, such as damages to rural economic activities (livestock farming, beekeeping, crops), as well as others that have been observed relatively recently at a remarkable intensity, such as the approach of bears to settlements or the increase of the number of road accidents involving bears.

The procedures for the awarding of the “Brown Bear Quality Label” (gold, silver, bronze label) have begun by the Commercial and Industrial Chamber of Florina within the LIFE AMYBEAR project.

As Mr Savvas Sapalidis, President of the Chamber of Florina, stated “Our Chamber once again highlights the ecological sensitivity that it possesses, participates in the project as it gives added value to local products and the agritourism destination of the Regional Unit of Florina”.

Presentation of the “trails of coexistence” and the environmental education actions

In the framework of Action E5 action of the LIFE AMYBEAR project, two paths – a mountainous one and a lakeside nature one – were re-marked by the environmental organisation “Callisto”, proposing the routes to be used in an educational and informational way in the field.

On 20/04/2021, the 3rd National Meeting of the Exchange of Experiences and Good Practices in the Bear Population Management was implemented via Webex in the framework of Action C.2 of the LIFE AMYBEAR project. The meeting was organised by the Decentralised Administration of Epirus-Western Macedonia in collaboration with the Management Body of Rodopi Mountain-Range National Park. A bear trapped in a wire loop, was found today Friday early in the morning and specifically at 08:00 am, next to the provincial road of Florina – Kleinon of the Municipality of Florina. The Directorate of Forests of the Decentralised Administration of Epirus – Western Macedonia, as soon as it was informed by the police for the incident, immediately called the Emergency Response Team of the Regional Unit of Florina, which is the body responsible for dealing with incidents of bears approaching residential areas.
