A two-day seminar for the training of the personnel of  Forestry Services of the Decentralized Administration of Epirus-Western Macedonia and the stakeholders involved in the management of bear populations, will take place on 4 & 5/12/2017 in Vlasti and Amyntaio, as part of the implementation of Action C2 of the LIFE AMYBEAR "Improving Human-Bear Coexistence Conditions in Municipality of Amyntaio".

The seminar, organized by the Decentralized Administration of Epirus-Western Macedonia in cooperation with the partners of the project, LEVER SA, Municipality of Amyntaio and NGO Callisto, mainly aims all the members of the Bear Emergency Teams of the Regional Units of Florina, Kastoria, Grevena, Kozani and Tsotyli, which have been set up due to to the relevant Joint Ministerial Decision, and secondary is open to scientists and stakeholders from local authorities and agencies with a direct interest in incidents of approaching and interacting with bears in residential areas.

The 1st cycle Training Program starts on Monday 4/12/2017 at 9:00 am in the meeting room of the Model Center for Livestock and Education of the Decentralized Administration of Epirus-Western Macedonia in Vlasti.

On the first day of the seminar, there will be presented thematic sections on the general principles of monitoring bears by taking measures for the management of incidents of approaching bears in inhabited areas, taking special measures and methods for dealing with cases of illegal use of poisoned baits, while at the same time a concise presentation of rabies surveillance and anti-rabies program which is implemented from the forestry services in Greece.

The proceedings of the seminar will continue and will be completed on Tuesday, 5/12/2017 in Amyntaio, where during the project visit, a demonstration of the bear population monitoring tools and dissuasive measures to address problematic situations will take place. The intervention actions required for each incident will also be presented, followed by a discussion on how to optimize co-ordination and how relevant stakeholders are involved in the management of future incidents.

Departure for the project visit to the implementation field will take place at 10:00 am, with participants meeting at the Amyntaio Guard Officers' Club in the Central Square at 09:30 am.

The LIFE AMYBEAR project is co-funded by the European Commission and own resources under the LIFE Nature and Biodiversity Program. LIFE AMYBEAR is implementing management actions to improve the coexistence of men and bears in the region. The expected results include both the elimination or the reduction to sustainable levels of negative interactions, as well as the enhancement and diffusion of the socio-economic benefits associated with the presence and coexistence of the bear with humans in the area.
